New Years Eve Masquerade
[It's been a hectic year, even for the Emerald Witch. Many things have happened and that included having to take an apprentice under her wing. Of course, even with all the shenanigans she found herself getting into, she at least had the luxury of retiring to her home in Blackgale and ignoring the magical social scene. She didn't like mingling with her fellow magic users, save a few, after all.
Unfortunately, she couldn't avoid ALL the invitations, especially something as big as a witches and wizards masquerade, being held at a magically hidden castle. Who said witches and wizards don't like to party hard on New Years Eve? The Magician's Guild sent her an invite, personally requesting her presence and oddly enough, her teacher sent her note encouraging her to do so. Maybe they just want a titled witch around? Who knows. In any case, at least she could take her student to help her get used to the magical side of society.
What Amelia doesn't know that other invites have been sent out randomly to other individuals...
Inside the castle, the rooms are beautifully lit and the ballroom is enchanted as if the guests are walking among a sea of stars. The room is full of witches and wizards and apprentices, all dressed formally for the occasion, dancing, laughing, and wearing masks of various designs. This is a magic castle of course, so there are other mysterious things to look out for...
Amelia keeps her style simple and practical: a white ballgown and an intricate silver mask will do for her.
One must wonder if this New Years Eve would pass peacefully or not... you never know with the magic users of this world.]

He's wandering around casually with a drink in his hand, making small talk. Frankly, he's not even sure how he got an invitation to this ball, unless his connection to Amelia plays a part. Whatever it is, he's not about to say no to a chance to rub elbows with some powerful people. ]

That catches her attention quick and she scans the room for said stranger.
Speaking of brushing elbows, she accidentally brushes by him. Coincidences are nice aren't they? ]
Oh, Sorry about that--
...

What's the matter Amelia? Don't recognize me?

What I'm wondering is what you're doing here exactly because you couldn't have found this castle without an invite.

... It was probably my teacher.

Still, he tries to act confident. He's been to a formal event or two in his day, and in the wardrobe department, he doesn't think he did too bad. Though there's no way in hell he's coming to this party without his fedora- which is sporting a gold band to match his outfit.
There's also no way in hell he's letting Kara out of his sight either. ]

[... but her grip on him is fairly tight, all the same. There are just too many strangers here, and it puts her on edge a little.]

But if Warren was here because her teacher sent out the invites, then he must have came about the same way as well. And she hurries over to him, still masked urgently whispering to him]
I wouldn't try any of the drinks without testing them. Last New Years Eve, it was spiked with a special potion that made everyone grow tails. Apparently someone thought it was funny.
no subject
... Thank you for the tip about the drinks, by the way.
no subject
I'll check the drinks myself soon. It's usually the apprentices who try to fool around with them, but I wouldn't put it past the adults.
no subject
Care to explain exactly what I'm doing here?
no subject
You don't look too comfortable here. I don't blame you. The magical world here works differently.
[As if on cue, a pair of witches across the room cast a spell to make harmless fireworks explode from the ceiling. Amelia sighs. It's so NOISY.]

[She has no idea what she's even doing here. She's not "magical". Not really. She only came because of Jacob, probably. She's nervous. Unsure. The large crowd of people makes her stick fairly close to him, but, sooner, rather than later, she's going to be drawn over to whatever food happens to be around.]
[It's not really her fault. Blame the elemental. Really.]
[But, if needed, she won't be hard to spot. Not in that dress (http://i.imgur.com/ihLMj.jpg), or that mask. (http://i.imgur.com/0XLhd.jpg)]

Amelia saw this woman with Jacob... oh, he did mention he had a girlfriend. And if she remembered correctly, Warren mentioned something about fire... She's unsure about how to approach her until out of the corner of her eye, she sees a group of witches who look like they want to cause trouble for the stranger. One of them points at plate of mini cheesecakes and they glow for a brief second.
Well, moving on over to Kara now before she can get to those]
Are... you enjoying yourself?
[Let it be known that Amelia isn't the best at starting conversations with new people]
no subject
[Only to stop. And look over at who's addressing her.]
Uh. It's... nice, yeah.
[The stranger gets a long look. Again.]
... Who are you? [Yep, that's totally a good way to meet new people.]
no subject
You can call me Amelia. Amelia Steinbeck.
... I met your partner Jacob once. He's a nice man, but I wasn't expecting him to show up on my side here. You both received invitations, right?
no subject
Oh. So you're the person from the park.
[She may or may not look less than thrilled with this revelation.]
And you... sent us invites to the party. A fancy party. You sent a guy you met in the park invites to a fancy party.
no subject
I didn't send them. That wasn't my magic on the invites that allowed you to find this place. Quite frankly, the both of you showing up was the last thing I would have expected to happen for this gathering.
