[It's a nice afternoon on the beach. Adam's taking this day to relax since no job's come up recently. He was thinking of visiting his old man, but apparently good ol' dad was taking a hike up in the mountains with some other friends. How strangely energetic of him for his age.

For Adam, it's times like these that make him feel a bit... isolated. He had very few normal friends to begin with. His friends were witches, wizards, and other strange beings, but it wasn't as if he could call them out on short notice and go, "Let's hang out!"

Worrisome thoughts or not, he always found the salty sea breeze, the sound of the waves, and the warmth of the setting sun enough to calm his mind and just appreciate what was around him. He parked his motorcycle and is out on the sand with a folding chair, four cans of beer and a classic guitar on his lap.

It's been a while since he played any tunes.]

I can't remember the last time I met an honest-to-God gentleman.

Well, either you haven't been looking in the right places or they're becoming a rare breed.

Probably both.

[imperviously]

Most likely.

[He picks up his guitar again and begins playing another classic]

[ Well, she definitely knows this one- her grandmother's tastes in music certainly rubbed off on her. She sings along- somewhere in the middle of the songs her eyes fall closed and, just for a moment, she's as unguarded as she's ever been. ]

[imperviously]

[The sun is getting in his eyes so he puts on his shades after finishing the song.]

... Not heading back anytime soon?

[youotterknow]

Hm? [ It takes her a moment to regain her bearings, tugging his jacket tighter around her shoulders ] I don't have anywhere to be, really. Why?

[imperviously]

Guess I'm not one to talk, but it seems strange that you're just all by yourself.

[youotterknow]

What's that supposed to mean?

[imperviously]

Is there anyone waiting for you?

[youotterknow]

No.

... No there's not.

[imperviously]

[He was about to consider bringing up the fact that he could tell she wasn't normal, but now didn't seem to be a good time. Her response tells him that much. So he ignores the humming of his amulet.

What he does say is this]

I usually wouldn't offer friendship up front since the last time I did that, it was for another girl. She took it the wrong way though and now I have a stalker.

But in this case, I wouldn't mind.

[Adam that is probably the weirdest way to word anything ever you tactless man]

[ She stares at him a moment, clearly weirded out. She gets up, rather quickly, shoving his jacket at him and grabbing her towel. ]

I don't want your pity.

[imperviously]

[That happens. He raises a brow as he takes the jacket back and calmly folds it up while he says quite simply, but seriously]

I don't offer pity. I don't know what to pity you for in the first place.

[youotterknow]

[ She goes quite red, though whether it's from anger or embarrassment remains to be seen, since she just sort of stalks off. Stupid guy and his stupid music making her feel all vulnerable. ]

[imperviously]

[And before she leaves, he calls out]

I'll be here in the evening if there's still no one to talk to.

[And playing his guitar again this time a very soft melody]

[ She stops in mid-stride, listening a moment. UGH Lys, you are an idiot. She fishes around in her purse before coming up with an old receipt. She scribbles something on it, stalks back, and shoves it at him.

Yes, she did just give you her phone number, Adam. ]

[imperviously]

[WELL.

He accepts the number.]

Thank you.

[youotterknow]

That's just because you're cute.

[imperviously]

The nerve of me trying to be decent and making that my redeeming feature.

[He does give a kind smile and pockets the number though.]

Don't be a smartass.

[imperviously]

Right, right.

[And suddenly, there's a louder vibrating noise- his own cell phone. He picks it up and opens up to look at the screen.]

... Do you like paintings? I need a second opinion here.

[youotterknow]

I... what?

[imperviously]

My dad painted this. He wants some feedback.

[Before she can voice any other objections, he holds up his phone so she can see the screen.

It's a picture of a painting and actually a rather beautiful one to boot. It's a sunset over a lake surrounded dark shadowy trees. There are dots of stars in the purple and blue hues of the sky where twilight is about to settle in and it reflects across the lack where on the shore, the rocks are meticulously painted. Someone's taken great pains to work on it and it shows.]
